The first week of January will be dedicated to Russia, at the foot of Mont-Blanc. The Russians celebrate their New Year on the 6th January and Chamonix wishes to establish a real exchange between our 2 cultures. This year will be the 3rd successive festival, offering a week of events : exhibitions, films, concerts, a sound and light show, photo competition and of course the Russian New Year which will be celebrated by all those hosting our russian visitors.
Wednesday 3rd January

Festival opening ceremony, presentation of the photocross and festival programme. Welcome drink.

2pm to 7pm: free entry to the exhibition “Glaciers and Men” (Espace Tairraz), the crystal museum and also the alpine musuem
4pm to 7.30pm: entertainment and ice sculpting by Colette Cossin; Talents Aiguilles welcome centre (Place Balmat)
9pm Fashion Show from Salomon (creations and presentation from Moskito Agency), followed by a live concert with TETE and JEHRO (Chamonix’s Ice rink).

SportKandahar : men's World Cup alpine ski 2007
from Saturday January 20th 2007 to Sunday January 21st 2007
It is now official; Chamonix Mont-Blanc and the Verte piste in Les Houches will hold a downhill and super combined event (downhill and slalom), both of which will count towards the men’s 2007 Alpine World Cup.
The traditional and spectacular downhill event on the mythical Verte piste in Les Houches will take place on the Saturday. And, for the second consecutive year, the Club des Sports de Chamonix will be in charge of organising the Super Combined event on the Sunday. In the morning the downhill (shorter that the standard downhill) will be followed by one slalom run on the final schuss of the Verte piste.

Victims of global warming, the glaciers are suffering. While the ice shelf is melting at high speed, the glaciers in the Alps are receding.
From Greenland to the Himalayas and from the Andes to the Antarctic (not forgetting the Alps, Scandinavia and Alsaka,) these glaciers seem to be doomed. Thus, the level of seas and oceans is rising forcing people to leave the shores, creating a new kind of castaway : climate castaways.
However, changes in temperature have always been part of the history of mankind with hot and cold periods taking turns.
Whilst all the scientific communities around the world focus on these issues, Chamonix is organising the exhibition « Of glaciers and men ».
The idea is to place side by side the scientific approach and the mythical approach. On one side first question asked by primitive men who thought that the Flood was responsable for the breaking down of glaciers.On the other side, the latest progress of a new discipline called glaciology.
The exhibition is divided into eight themes (Evolution over a long period, the large climatic cycles, the large glaciers, the fluctuations related from memory, the glacier as a moving element, the glaciers as forces of nature, the possible climatic evolutions). The themes aim to guide in his dicovery and understanding of the glacier phenomena, its action on the landscape as well as the fear it has generated during the Small Glacier Period (1600/1820) in particular the valley of Chamonix. Engravings and tales of this time are proof from the not so distant past.
A collection of more than 250 photos from all around the world illustrates the biggest and most significant glaciers.
The visit ends with documents illustrating a totally frozen globe as was no doubt its origin up until computer-generated images showing the glaciers at their maximm extending all the way to Lyon, Grenoble and Geneva, satellite pictures, films and records from the polar cores.

ExhibitionThe cristal museum

The Cristal Museum, located in the Tairraz centre, is the materialization of a project nurtured by both the mineralogical society and the town hall. The exhibited pieces originate from private and public collections and include many magnificent cristals from the Mont-Blanc massive (smoked quartz, pink fluorine).
You will discover:
- a scenic presentation of the minerals (reconstitution of their natural environment)
- a journey through time which explains the formation of the cristals, their colours, structure, origins etc. In addition to an exceptional display of local minerals, you will be able to admire pieces from the southern Alps, the Gothard, the Himalayas, the Rocky Mountains, the Oural and Namibia.
Open every days from 2pm to 7pm, from september 25th , closed on sundays.

Sport17 ème Corrida de Chamonix

This popular race for children, families and adults alike, is organised by Chamonix Mont-Blanc Marathon, with the help of the Sports Club, the town council, the Tourist Office, shopkeepers, hoteliers, the lift companies and numerous volunteers.
Organised races through the streets of Chamonix (number of circuits varying according to age). Open to all!
Parcours en boucle (900 mètres) dans les rues du centre ville.
Les courses pour les enfants comportent 1,2 ou 3 tours selon l'âge des enfants.
La corrida des familles (même famille ou pas) : un homme prend le départ, puis récupère une femme et ils font le 2ème tour, puis récupèrent l'enfant pour effectuer le 3ème tour.
La corrida se court par équipe de 2 courreurs, de même sexe ou non, sur 12 tours avec relais obligatoire à chaque tour.
Au Majestic à 20:30 : Repas raclette gratuit pour les coureurs et 5 euros pour les accompagnants.
